In an effort to create more responsive and seamless manufacturing career pathways, the Oh-Penn Manufacturing Collaborative conducted a Skills Gap Analysis. One gap that was identified was at the entry level of manufacturing career pathway to prepare individuals with the basic, fundamental skills and competencies needed to enter into and success in a manufacturing career pathway. The Manufacturing Readiness Program (MRP) was designed to help fill this gap. The MRP combines two weeks of “soft skills” training, which includes everything from goal planning to the importance of getting to work on time, followed by four weeks of skill training, which includes OSHA-10 and Certified Production Technician critical production functions. Participants receive training in Safety, Manufacturing Processes and Production, Quality Practices and Measurement and Maintenance Awareness. In addition, each participant will also earn a WorkKeys credential.
The first cohort of the Oh-Penn Manufacturing Readiness Program completed their training and testing on December 22, 2014. Of the nine who began the program, five completed in the scheduled time, two secured employment during the program and are scheduled to complete by the end of February and two had to leave for medical/personal reasons. Two of the five who completed in the scheduled time have secured employment in the weeks since program completion. Participants for this cohort were from Mahoning, Trumbull and Mercer Counties.
Mahoning-Columbiana Training Association, the Oh-Penn Manufacturing Collaborative, Compass Family & Community Services and Kent State University-Trumbull Campus worked together with Thomas P. Miller & Associates to successfully complete this initial cohort and received support from the following manufacturers: KTSDI, Gasser Chair, Butech Bliss, Quaker Manufacturing, Joy Cone, Lyco Manufacturing
The next cohort begins February 23, 2015. For additional information, please contact Cynthia Grier, Oh-Penn Ohio Coordinator, at firstname.lastname@example.org or 330 965 1787 x7144.
