For the past 18 years, Lawrence County, PA has hosted the Educator in the Workplace program, designed to give educators “real-world” applications of the subjects they teach in school. As part of the Workforce Innovation Fund grant, this program has been expanded to Ohio, and is focused on placing educators in manufacturing workplaces.
In late May and early June, the word went out to area educators and manufacturers, informing them about the program and the benefits of participation, including either three graduate level semester hours through YSU (for Ohio teachers) or the choice of a $250 stipend. The goal was to get the program in place for this summer, with the deadline for enrollment of June 14th.
Even with the time constraints, the response was overwhelming, especially since this is the first time this has been offered in Ohio.
The official Ohio count is 21 educators, with 14 local manufacturers agreeing to host them. In Pennsylvania, three teachers representing Laurel School District, Commodore Perry, and New Castle Christian Academy school districts completed the application process and three companies have agreed to host.
Some of the school districts represented in Ohio are Boardman, Canfield, Youngstown City, Howland, Lordstown, Choffin CTC, and Trumbull County CTC. Subjects taught range from Algebra 2 and Calculus to World History and Social Studies.
The host companies manufacture everything from custom chairs to valves to windows and doors. The educators will spend 32 hours this summer at their host site and will shadow current employees to better understand manufacturing and the careers that are available. Each educator will create a lesson plan based on what he or she has learned, and those plans will be published and shared with other educators.
Thank you to all of the participating educators, and especially to those manufacturers who have agreed to host them. These companies and individuals are truly working to create the career pathway that will lead area students towards a bright future in manufacturing.
A special THANK YOU to all participating manufacturers: Ajax TOCCO Magnethermic; BOC Water Hydraulics; Brilex; Butech Bliss; City Machine Technologies; Clearview Design; Gasser Chair; Glunt Industries; Hereaus Electro-Nite; Joy Cone Company; KTSDI; Specialty Metal: Specialty Fab; Starr; Taylor Winfield; VEC, Inc; VEKA
