Through West Central Job Partnership and the Pennsylvania CareerLinks® in Lawrence and Mercer County sponsored two cohorts of students for a short-term welding program. A 300 hour program was conducted through the Lawrence County Career & Technical Center from 6/10/13-10/24/13, as well as a 400 hour program through Laurel Technical Institute from 5/29/13-9/20/13.
In Lawrence County, 12 participants finished the training through and in Mercer County 15 individuals completed the program. Individuals were instructed in the welding processes of Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), Flux-cored arc welding (FCAW), Gas metal arc welding (GMAW), and Gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW). The students were tested to the AWS D 1.1 Standard with 23 individuals earning a total of 60 credentials; 14 are AWS qualified and nine are AWS certified in at least one welding process. Six individuals earned their AWS D 1.1 qualification in all four welding areas that they were trained.
The participants also went through OSHA 10 Training and passed the WorkKeys® assessment earning a Bronze National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC) or higher.
